Larian Studios Clarifies Its Implementation of Machine Learning for Next Divinity

The team behind acclaimed RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just unveiled its new project, creating immense hype within the gaming community. However, recent remarks from the studio's figurehead have brought clarity to the discussion, addressing the developer's approach toward AI tools.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a new clarification, Larian's director detailed that the team is using AI technology for specific ancillary tasks. These include fleshing out pitch decks, creating rough visual ideas, and drafting temporary dialogue.

Importantly, Vincke made clear that the final assets in the game will be crafted entirely by human creatives. "Larian is creating all the content ourselves," he said.

Larian is actively growing our pool of concept artists and are currently putting together writing teams.

As this area is being particularly mentioned — we right now have over twenty artistic staff and have positions available for further artists.

All our efforts we do is incremental and designed to having people spend greater focus on the creative process.

Every AI system implemented properly is a boost to a developer's routine, not a substitute for their skill.

Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent

The revelation of using AI initially provoked concern among a segment of the player base. In response, Vincke provided more detail on social media.

"We use AI tools to gather inspiration, just like we use the internet and reference books," he stated. "During the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a simple sketch for structure which we then replace with authentic artwork."

He added, "Our studio recruits creatives for their unique talent, not for their ability to execute what a algorithm proposes."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had earlier broken down the company's focused approach to AI and ML, grouping its use into primary functions:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: Areas like motion capture cleaning, audio processing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adapting animations for different models.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using technology to quickly build simple models of gameplay ideas to validate concepts ahead of expensive development.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how AI could eventually enhance new forms of reactivity, especially in creating dynamic reactions in a detailed game universe.

He specifically affirmed that key artistic disciplines — including visual art — are are absolutely not areas where the company is replacing creative talent. On the contrary, Larian is actively hiring in these very roles.

"Our studio is not releasing a game with AI-generated content, nor looking at reducing staff to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
