The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
