The Gory Animated Film Conclusion That Haunts Audiences

Out of every adult-oriented animated films I’ve personally viewed, no other has stuck with me quite like the terror-laced conclusion of the graphically gory as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.

Back in the year 2015, this Spanish filmmaker developed a grim, melancholy and often savage universe that included a few small , desolate hints of optimism.

While The Unicorn Wars feels like it stemmed from a drive to expand animation further, the filmmaker clarified that it was more an attempt to communicate a widespread, multicultural message concerning “the mutual source of every conflict.”

That message is expressed via a squad of vividly colored bears , clearly inspired by a well-known series of lovable characters.

Being raised in a community built around militarism and the war machine, many of the bears are fixated on slaughtering unicorns, due to a sacred text that tells them they used to be masters of the woods, until the unicorns drove them out.

A few have not completely accepted the indoctrination, and would rather sample substances and mate in the forest.

In contrast to their cuddly counterparts, these vivid animals have visible genitals and definite libidos.

For one particularly cruel, cynical bear, Bluey, the battle against unicorns turns into a road to power — and specifically to authority above his softer, nicer brother the character Tubby.

The character acts as a tormentor , an obvious sociopath , and when fear dominates his squad and takes his fellow soldiers sequentially, he grabs increasingly influence for himself, via progressively bloody, destructive ways.

At the same time, these mythical beings are suffering their own nightmare, in the form of a spreading, destructive monster in their habitat.

“Initially, it seems like a comedy,” the director said. “But then it turns into a more serious and melancholic film. And ultimately, it transforms into a terrifying movie.”

Unicorn Wars begins resembling one of the most playful movies by a legendary filmmaker, which find a wicked pleasure in permitting drawn beings curse, shoot each other, or have intimate relations.

Afterward it evolves into closer to a darker work from the same director, with increasingly visual gore , a palpable relation to the real tragedy of battle.

Ultimately, it becomes a full-on Grand Guignol carnage.

The terror that makes this an ideal spooky-season watch starts well before than one might expect.

Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore gorehounds, for lovers of graphic films who wish to watch a movie they haven’t ever seen on-screen before, and are able to withstand a plot which delivers absolutely no punches.

View it in a dark room without any distractions, and the conclusion will burrow into your mind and take up residence there.
