The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.” As the debut season of the acclaimed program wrapping up—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus. Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that. “It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.” In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show. “We don't try to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.” “It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in. The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus? Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats. “We have some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.” Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort. “I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.” Then again, why mess with the classics? “I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
