Exiting her residence, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore made it clear a crisis was unfolding. While standing on the avenue, speaking to a couple who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she became aware of someone coming up behind her. It was a beach patrol officer, sprinting towards Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit. “I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, while holding that large equipment and without footwear … He’s running at something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would tell you to move in the opposite direction. “Absolutely no pause, but just completely full throttle sprinting.” An Iconic Image of Bravery During Crisis The photograph that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many instances of heroism in the aftermath of the terror attack. Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics treating many victims. Collective Response and Solidarity Doolan’s account was just one of many to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the patrol base beside the location of the incident becoming a makeshift treatment center. We are overwhelmed by the kindness directed at our personnel,” the organization commented. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the hope that it helps those impacted.” Local Government Praise Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many full-time lifeguards, said that the team rose to the occasion from the moment the incident began until late that night. “We have heard so many powerful narratives, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” stated a mayor. “These individuals exhibit dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned beaches safe for the public, but what we observed on Sunday should be commended. “While we mourn and grapple with the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much positivity we have seen in the presence of such evil.”
